2. _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
Please carefully read these instructions in this chapter and
the information in the following chapters.
The IRIX 6.5.2 Execution Environment product (_e_o_e) contains
foundation level software that requires a miniroot
installation when upgrading from older releases up through
IRIX 6.4. Because of changes made to the IRIX 6.5.2
installation tools to support overlays, upgrading to IRIX
6.5.2 from IRIX 6.5 or IRIX 6.5.1 also requires a miniroot
installation unless you first install patchSG0003384 (or
successor patches). If you install patchSG0003384, you can
use a regular "live" installation to upgrade to 6.5.2
because this patch installs the necessary installation
tools. Failure to use the IRIX 6.5.2 installation tools to
install IRIX 6.5.2 may cause damaging installation results.
Please follow the installation instructions provided in the
CD booklet that accompanies the IRIX 6.5.2 CDs.
When upgrading to 6.5.2, the 6.5.2 Installation Tools CD
should be inserted first. After the IRIX 6.5.2 Installation
Tools CD has been read, _i_n_s_t will prompt for another CD to
be inserted. To reduce the number of conflicts that need to
be dealt with manually, you must insert the remaining IRIX
6.5.2 CDs (if any). If upgrading from a pre-6.5 release,
the base 6.5 CDs and any optional 6.5 CDs must also be
inserted so that the product information for each can be
read before the installation is started. Once the
installation is started, _i_n_s_t will prompt the user when
another CD is required.
In contrast to versions of IRIX prior to 6.4, all applicable
patch products will be selected for default installation.
The selected patches will apply to either installed base
products or distribution base products that are marked for
install.
Inst and swmgr now support a new type of installation
product called an _o_v_e_r_l_a_y. Overlays, like patches, are
products that only contain the subset of files from the base
release that have been changed to fix a specific problem or
set of problems. Unlike patches, however, the files that
are being replaced are not saved. Therefore, it is not
possible to remove an overlay without reinstalling the
original base product. The name of the overlay product is
the same as the name of the product it will upgrade. Thus,
an overlay for the eoe product will also have the product
name eoe. Two distinct types of overlays are supported:
maintenance overlays and feature overlays. Maintenance
overlays contain bug fixes and minimal support for new
- 2 -
hardware. Feature overlays contain bug fixes, support for
new hardware, and new software and hardware features.
Because different overlay products often depend on one
another, these two overlay types may not be mixed. Thus, a
system may have feature overlay products installed or maint
overlay products installed but not both. When inst or swmgr
first encounters a distribution containing overlay products,
the user will be asked to choose between maintenance
overlays and feature overlays. Once a choice has been made,
products of the other overlay type will not be displayed to
the user. See the _s_t_r_e_a_m and _o_v_e_r_l_a_y__m_o_d_e preferences
within inst or swmgr for more information on overlays.
2.1 _K_n_o_w_n__P_r_o_b_l_e_m_s__a_n_d__W_o_r_k_a_r_o_u_n_d_s__w_i_t_h__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
+o When performing a clean installation of 6.5 + 6.5.2,
all default overlay products will initially be selected
for install. If the user chooses not to install from
all the 6.5 base CDs, there may be some 6.5.2 overlay
products selected for installation for which there is
no corresponding 6.5 product in the distribution.
These overlay products are uninstallable and may be
deselected with the inst command _k_e_e_p
_i_n_c_o_m_p_l_e_t_e_o_v_e_r_l_a_y_s. Failure to deselect these products
will result in installation conflicts.
+o When using inst keywords such as _p_r_e_r_e_q_s or _s_t_a_n_d_a_r_d to
make installation selections, it is possible that these
keywords will not resolve to any products, resulting in
a confusing inst message. For example, the installation
command "install prereqs" may result in this message :
_N_o _m_a_t_c_h_e_s _f_o_r "_p_r_e_r_e_q_s" _w_e_r_e _f_o_u_n_d. This simply
indicates that there were no products in the current
distribution that would resolve any of the existing
prereq conflicts. It is not an error.
+o If the verbose preference is set and a pre 6.5 version
of inst or swmgr is used to install the 6.5 images,
inst or swmgr may emit warnings about an unknown
attribute _n_o_r_q_s. These messages are harmless and will
not affect the install.
+o Initiating automatic miniroot installs from _m_u_l_t_i-_u_s_e_r
mode may fail on certain machines with Toshiba 5701
CDROM drives. The failure will occur when attempting
to boot from the CDROM drive and a message will be
displayed on the textport stating that the _C_D_R_O_M _d_e_v_i_c_e
_i_s _n_o_t _r_e_a_d_y. If this occurs, a standard miniroot
install must be used to install 6.5.
- 3 -
+o Initiating automatic miniroot installs from _m_u_l_t_i-_u_s_e_r
mode may fail on certain Octane machines. The failure
will occur when attempting to boot from the CDROM drive
and a message will be displayed on the textport stating
that there was an _e_x_e_c_u_t_e _f_o_r_m_a_t _e_r_r_o_r. If this
occurs, a standard miniroot install must be used to
install 6.5.
+o If installing from multiple CDs using a single _r_e_m_o_t_e
CDROM drive, it is highly recommended that the CDs be
mounted at /_C_D_R_O_M on the remote system. This specific
mount point enables inst or swmgr to correctly prompt
the user when to switch CDs on the remote machine.
Failure to mount remote CDs at /CDROM will result in a
confusing error message from inst or swmgr regarding a
missing file when in reality a CD switch on the remote
system is required. If remote CDs are mounted at
/CDROM, an interrupt menu will appear and the user will
be prompted for the correct CD when a switch is
required. At this point, simply insert the correct CD
into the remote CDROM drive and enter _r_e_t_r_y from the
interrupt menu.
+o If inst is displaying graphical progress dialogs in the
miniroot, there is a remote chance that the
installation may be interrupted by moving the mouse
unexpectedly. If this occurs, continue the
installation from the interrupt menu by choosing the
_c_o_n_t_i_n_u_e option.
+o Inst may initially report that there is enough
available disk space to complete the installation, but
when the _g_o command is given, reports that there is not
enough disk space. This is because the latter check is
much more detailed. Use the inst command _h_e_l_p
_s_p_a_c_e_e_r_r_o_r for more information.
+o If you have multiple filesystems on your system, inst
may report that there is not enough space on one
particular filesystem. Try using the _v_i_e_w _f_i_l_e_s_y_s_t_e_m_s
command in inst. This will provide more detailed disk
space information when the _l_i_s_t and _s_t_e_p commands are
used.
+o The inst _c_o_n_f_l_i_c_t_s command (or the Software Manager
Conflicts window) may report that there are no
conflicts, even though installation conflicts are
listed when you try to quit. To see the conflicts
before quitting, set the delay_conflicts preference to
_o_f_f.
- 4 -
+o Inst cannot always install from CDROM unless running
with root permissions. To work around, run as root;
or, before the installation, make sure that the CD is
already mounted by allowing mediad to mount the CD or,
if mediad is disabled, using the _m_o_u_n_t(_1_M) command.
+o Inst may generate a conflict if you try to upgrade a
product (1) that is a prerequisite for some other
product, and (2) whose name changes as part of the
upgrade. To work around, issue the inst command _s_e_t
_r_u_l_e_s_o_v_e_r_r_i_d_e _o_n, which allows the installation to
proceed despite the conflict.
+o When you issue the _q_u_i_t command from inst, it
automatically recomputes the QUICKSTART information for
any executables and shared objects (dso's) just
installed. See the manual entry _r_q_s(_1) for details.
You will see the following message while this is being
done:
RRRReeeeqqqquuuuiiiicccckkkkssssttttaaaarrrrttttiiiinnnngggg EEEELLLLFFFF ffffiiiilllleeeessss ((((sssseeeeeeee rrrrqqqqssssaaaallllllll((((1111)))))))) ........ 99999999%%%%
Occasionally inst may report errors that occur during
this phase. These errors may cause some applications
to start up less quickly but otherwise these errors are
harmless.
+o The IRIX 6.5 version of swmgr will not run under
earlier IRIX releases.
2.2 _M_i_n_i_r_o_o_t _W_o_r_k_a_r_o_u_n_d _f_o_r _C_l_e_a_n _I_n_s_t_a_l_l _w_i_t_h _F_D_D_I _a_n_d

If you have a clean system with FDDI and Ethernet, that is,
with no networking information, such as /_e_t_c/_h_o_s_t_s or
/_e_t_c/_s_y_s__i_d on the disk, and you boot miniroot over the
network, you will be prompted with some of these questions:
What is the hostname (system name) of your machine?
What network interface would you like to configure?
What is the network address of <your system name>?
What is the netmask for <IP address>?
In general, you will be prompted with these
questions on any system containing other optional
network products that has no networking information.
If you are unsure of the network interfaces or
- 5 -
networking was still not started correctly, you can
restart networking by typing this entry:
